Over Christmas break I binge read a suspense novel from one of my favorite authors. It’s amazing where you can find inspiration if you keep your eyes and ears open. In this particular book, the hero has just taken down a ruthless terrorist organization and saved an innocent girl. At the end of the book she is thanking him for helping, but concerned about what she will do with her live given her past bad choices. His philosophical answer as only a hero in a novel can deliver after an adrenaline packed story was this: “Yesterday is yesterday. Tomorrow is tomorrow. Tomorrow… you can be whatever you want to be.”
What a great thought to start off the New Year as we think about what we want to accomplish in the new decade. Bad choices in work habits, unproductive lines being represented, doing business with people we don’t respect, or any other myriad of personal challenges can all be changed tomorrow. To do that, we must first commit to a plan to change what we don’t like and build on what we do.
New Year’s Day represents a Fresh Start. It is the time we can look back on the past year and think about what we want to accomplish in the new year. This time of year is a particularly good time to review where we are in our personal journey since it is the end of a decade. Ask yourself am I better or worse off than I was 10 years ago? Where do I want to be 10 years from now?
Right now at the beginning of a new year is the perfect time to take stock of past life choices and future life dreams. Ask, am I still on the right course that I set for myself? If not, what corrections can be made so the future is as enjoyable and productive as I want it to be.
This is the best time of year to look at the opportunities around us. There will be opportunities present themselves throughout the year if we pay attention and recognize them. The question is will we be able to see them for what they are and seize them. Get up every morning expecting to find an opportunity to better yourself and this time next year you will be amazed at the positive life direction.
The old decade, the old year and yesterday are all behind us. A new decade is starting. What’s your plan for where you will be in ten years, five years, one year and how does it start tomorrow? Happy New Year
